Ladakh Monastery Trekking

Needless to say, the name of this trek simply means that the trekking tour will include a visit to different monasteries established in the whole Ladakh region. This is incredibly the most admiring trek in the whole Ladakh area where the trekkers can find the allurements of trekking excitements along with the most soothing and peaceful monasteries of Ladakh.

Definitely, Ladakh is best known for the scads of monasteries which are the true emblem of either Mahayana or Heenyana sect of Buddhism. The monasteries of Ladakh bring the region its unique flavor and beauty where most of them are being built on the lone rocks or on the craggy mountain faces for the innermost pacification. The head of the lama is known as ‘Kushak’, that means reincarnation that will bring the innermost soulful and peaceful effect on your mind and body.

This trek will carry the trekkers to some of the most beautiful villages and fascinating Gompas on a lesser known trek through this fantastic region. With its snow covered peaks, remote villages, and ancient Buddhist monasteries – Ladakh transports the individual to another peaceful world.

The monasteries and high passes visited by the trekkers in the Ladakh region are: Shey and Thiksey Monastery, Hemis Monastery, Lamayuru Monastery, Stok Palace, Wanla, Hinju, Sumdo Doksa, Prinkiti La, Konzke La, Sumda Choon, Lanak and Alchi Monastery.

This is simply a moderate climbing that will invite the trekkers along the fascinating and well managed routes towards different monasteries that will fervor trekkers the most during June to October.

Day 01 : Delhi – Leh (Complete Rest in Leh for acclimatisation)

Take the morning flight for Leh. Check into the guest house and relax the whole day. This is necessary for getting acclimatised. Overnight at the guesthouse.

Day 02 : Leh – Shey – Thiksey - Hemis (2050 M)

On this day you will go a sightseeing trip to some ancient monasteries in this area.

Shey Gompa is about 15 kms from Leh. It used to be the summer palace of the kings of Ladakh. There are lots of Stupas and Gompas built around the palace. Shey palace was built by Deldan Namgyal in the beginning of 17’Th century AD. Main attraction in Shey is the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the Dresthang Gompa.

Thiksey Gompa, close to Shey is about 17 kms from Leh. The monastery is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Ladakh and belongs to the Gelukspa order.

Hemis, about 45 kms south of Leh it is one of the most famous and largest monastery in Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17’Th century. The setting is perfect with the monastery cradled in a lovely valley, surrounded by streams and fronted by long Mani walls. Overnight stay at the guest house.

Day 03 : Leh - Alchi

Today we travel by jeeps along the Indus river to Alchi. We pass through a number of lovely villages including Nimu and Saspol. The scenery is fabulous with the Stok Range to the south and the Ladakh Range to the north. Near Nimu we get a view of the point where the Zanskar River flows into the Indus. Alchi is a wonderful village with one of the most beautiful gompas in Ladakh. The paintings at Alchi Gompa are almost a thousand years old. We spend a night here at a simple hotel to give us time to explore.

Day 04 : Alchi - Lamayuru

Today we continue to Lamayuru – the starting point for our trek. From Khalsi the road begins a steep ascent involving nearly 30 switchbacks in the last 25 km to Lamayuru. We set up camp in Lamayuru and in the afternoon visit the Lamayuru Gompa. In the 16th century it was declared a holy site in which even criminals could seek sanctuary making it known as place of freedom.

Day 05 : Leh - Wanla via Lamayuru 4 hrs.

The drive from Leh to Lamayuru takes about three hours. After a visit to the ancient monastery at Lamayuru, you can start your walk to Wanla which is a short hour away; past a small pass Prinkti La (3750m). Dinner and overnight stay in guest house.

Day 06 :Wanla - Hinju (3720 mts/12205 ft) 5 hrs

Today's trek winds through more quaint Ladakhi villages before arriving at the meadow camp outside the village of Hinju.

Day 07 : Hinju - Sumdo Doksa (4430 mts/14530 ft) via Kongskil La (4950 mts/16236 ft) 6 hrs

A gradual ascent will bring you to the Kongskil La ridge from where you will get great views of Stok and Karakoram ranges. The other side pass is scree and a little difficult to negotiate.

Day 08 : Sumda Doksa - Base of Dung Dung Chan la (4430 mts/14530 ft) 5 hrs

After a few river crossings and the village of Sumdo Chenmo, the trails starts gradually ascending to the base of Dung Dung Chan La. Look out for edelweiss and other rare flowers of Ladakh along the way

Day 09 : Base of Dung Dung Chan La - Chilling (3550 mts/11645 ft) 5 hrs

It's a straight climb from the Dung Dung Chan La pass. The trail then descends gradually to the village of Chilling from where a vehicle will pick you up and drop you off at Leh.

Day 10 : Free day at Chilling

The day is for explorations.

Day 11 : Chilling - Leh

In the morning we will drive for Leh along with Zanskar River & eventually reach its confluence with the River Indus. From here the road is good & it is easy drive back to Leh. On arrival transfer to hotel. Dinner & overnight stay in hotel.

Day 12 : Leh - Delhi

In the morning transfer to the airport to catch flight for Delhi. On arrival at Delhi take a half day guided sightseeing. In the evening transfer to International airport to catch onwards flight.
