Itinerary

Your Ladakh adventure begins the moment you land at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh, one of the highest commercial airports in the world at 10,682 ft. Upon arrival, our team will transfer you to your hotel in Leh for a smooth check-in.

The most important thing you can do today is rest.

Leh sits at 11,562 ft above sea level, and altitude acclimatization is critical to enjoying the rest of your Leh Ladakh trip without health complications like Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Avoid strenuous activity, stay well hydrated, and let your body adjust to the thin Himalayan air.

If you're feeling good by the evening, take a gentle stroll through the vibrant Leh Main Market, a colorful bazaar lined with Tibetan handicrafts, Pashmina wool products, local jewelry, and cozy cafes serving butter tea and momos. This is the perfect introduction to Ladakh's unique blend of Tibetan Buddhist and Ladakhi culture.

Today's Leh local sightseeing tour takes you through the historically and spiritually rich Sham Valley, often called the "Baby Trek" region of Ladakh. After breakfast, set off to explore some of Leh's most iconic landmarks :

  • Hall of Fame - A moving museum dedicated to the brave Indian soldiers who fought in the Kargil War and battles on the Siachen Glacier. A must-visit for every Indian traveler.
  • Gurudwara Pathar Sahib - A sacred Sikh shrine built in 1517 in memory of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Located 25 km from Leh on the Leh - Srinagar highway, it remains a deeply revered spiritual site for pilgrims and travelers alike.
  • Magnetic Hill - One of Ladakh's most fascinating natural phenomena. Vehicles appear to move uphill on their own, a gravity-defying optical illusion that has puzzled tourists and scientists for decades. A great spot for a memorable photo and a fun travel story.
  • Sangam View (Indus-Zanskar River Confluence) - Witness the breathtaking point where the turquoise Zanskar River meets the darker, swifter Indus River. This dramatic confluence is one of the most photographed spots on the Leh - Kargil route. For the adventurous, river rafting on the Zanskar is available here.
  • Leh Palace - Modeled on the Potala Palace of Lhasa, Tibet, this 17th-century nine - story royal palace towers over Leh town and offers sweeping panoramic views of the Indus Valley and the Stok Kangri range.
  • Shanti Stupa (Sunset Point) - End the day at this stunning white-domed Buddhist stupa perched 11,841 ft above sea level. Built by Japanese Buddhist monks in 1991, Shanti Stupa is one of the best sunset spots in Ladakh; the sky turns gold and crimson as the mountains glow in the fading light.

Brace yourself for one of the most thrilling drives in the world. After an early breakfast, you'll depart Leh toward Nubra Valley, crossing the legendary Khardung La Pass at 18,380 ft, long celebrated as the highest motorable road in the world and an iconic milestone on every Leh Ladakh road trip.

The drive to Khardungla is an exhilarating switchback journey through snow-capped peaks, frozen streams, and sweeping mountain vistas. Stop at the top for photographs beside the famous signboard, breathe in the crisp Himalayan air (literally, oxygen is noticeably thinner here!), and experience the raw grandeur of the Karakoram Range.

Descending from Khardung La, you enter the lush Nubra Valley, also known as "Ldorma," meaning the Valley of Flowers in the local Ladakhi language. Then visit Diskit Monastery, one of the oldest and largest Buddhist monasteries in Nubra Valley. Diskit Gompa houses a colossal 32-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha (the Future Buddha).

Arriving in Hunder village, check into your riverside hotel/camp. In the late afternoon, head to the famous Hunder Sand Dunes for an unforgettable double-humped Bactrian camel ride, a rare activity found almost nowhere else in India.

Few drives in India rival the scenic grandeur of the Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake route via the Shyok River. After breakfast and checkout, you'll wind your way east along the Shyok River Valley, a remote, jaw-dropping corridor flanked by towering brown mountains, turquoise glacial streams, and tiny villages.

Passing through Durbuk and Tangtse villages in the high-altitude Changthang region of Ladakh (home to the nomadic Changpa tribe and their famous Pashmina goats), you'll arrive at your destination: the legendary Pangong Tso Lake. Enjoy the evening at leisure by the lakeside, watching the shifting colors, capturing stunning sunset photographs, or simply sitting in quiet awe.

Today's drive takes you deeper into the raw, remote wilderness of Eastern Ladakh, a landscape so vast and silent that it feels like the edge of the world. After breakfast and checkout from Pangong, you'll head south through Man village, Merak, over the rugged Tsaga La mountain pass, through the historically significant Chushul and the moving Rezang La War Memorial.

Continuing south, you'll arrive in Hanle, one of Ladakh's most remote and rewarding destinations, situated close to the India - China border at an altitude of approximately 14,500 ft. Hanle is famous for three remarkable things: India's Highest Astronomical Observatory, Hanle Monastery (17th Century), and Hanle's Dark Sky Reserve.

This is the day you've been building toward, and it will not disappoint. After an early breakfast, set out from Hanle for Umling La Pass at 19,024 ft above sea level, officially recognized as the world's highest motorable road, surpassing even the legendary Khardung La Pass. Umling La was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of India, an engineering marvel achieved in the most extreme terrain and conditions imaginable.

The drive to Umling La is an adventure in itself. The road winds through a series of dramatic hairpin bends as it climbs steeply through a desolate, high - altitude landscape of brown rock, glacial ice, and enormous skies. The absence of vegetation at this altitude gives the scenery an almost otherworldly, lunar quality; it's one of the most dramatic drives you'll ever take.

At the top of Umling La, stand at the edge of the sky and take in one of the most extraordinary panoramic views in all of the Himalayas. On a clear day, you can see deep into the remote valleys of the Changthang plateau and, on some days, glimpses of the Tibetan plateau beyond. Take your time, photograph, reflect, and savor the incredible achievement of reaching the highest driveable point on Earth.

Important : The extreme altitude at Umling La means oxygen levels are significantly lower than at sea level. The acclimatization days earlier in the itinerary (Leh rest day, Nubra, Pangong, and Hanle) are specifically designed to prepare your body for this altitude. Listen to your body, carry water, and descend if you experience severe symptoms.

After your time at the pass, descend back to Hanle for dinner and your final night in this remote, sky - filled corner of Ladakh.

After a final breakfast in Hanle, begin the long but scenic return drive to Leh. Your route takes you through some of Eastern and Central Ladakh's most spectacular landscapes: Loma, Nyoma, Mahe Bridge, Chumathang (famous for its natural hot springs), and onward past Thiksey Monastery and Shey Palace before arriving back in Leh.

Arrive in Leh by evening. Rest, pack, and spend your last night reflecting on eight unforgettable days across the highest landscapes on Earth.

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and transfer to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport for your onward flight to Delhi or your home city. Your 8-day Leh Ladakh tour package with Hanle and Umling La Pass, through the Land of Buddha, the Mini Tibet of India, comes to a close. But Ladakh has a way of calling you back.
