Itinerary

Your Leh Manali Delhi road trip begins at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Upon arrival you are transferred to your hotel for check-in.

Today is dedicated entirely to rest and acclimatization in Leh. At 11,562 ft above sea level, Leh requires your body time to adjust before heading to higher altitudes in the coming days. Avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of water, and let yourself settle into the pace of this extraordinary high-altitude city in Ladakh.

By evening, if you feel well enough, take a stroll through Leh town to explore the local market, sample Ladakhi cuisine, and get your first feel for the unique Tibetan-Buddhist culture that defines life in this remote Himalayan territory.

Today's Leh local sightseeing covers the most iconic landmarks of the city and the surrounding Sham Valley, while also serving as a second acclimatization day before the high - altitude drives ahead.

  • Hall of Fame is a deeply moving military museum dedicated to the Indian Army soldiers who defended Ladakh in the Kargil War of 1999 and the 1962 Indo-China War.
  • Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, 25 km from Leh on the Srinagar highway, is a revered Sikh shrine built in 1517 and maintained by the Indian Army.
  • Magnetic Hill is Ladakh's most famous natural curiosity, a spot where vehicles appear to roll uphill against gravity.
  • Sangam View is the dramatic confluence of the milky-turquoise Zanskar River and the darker, swifter Indus River. One of the most photographed spots on the Leh-Srinagar highway and a popular location for river rafting.
  • Leh Palace rises nine stories above the town on a commanding hilltop, a 17th-century royal residence modeled on the Potala Palace of Lhasa, Tibet.
  • End the day at Shanti Stupa for one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of Ladakh, watching the golden light fade over the Indus Valley as the mountains glow amber and the valley fills with shadow.

An early start today for one of the greatest drives on the entire Leh Ladakh tour. You will cross Khardung La Pass at 18,380 ft, the highest motorable road in the world, before descending into the lush, flower-filled Nubra Valley.

The climb to Khardung La is a series of dramatic switchbacks through snow-streaked peaks and glacial terrain. At the summit, prayer flags snap in the freezing wind, and the panoramic views of the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges are extraordinary. The air here is nearly 40% thinner than at sea level, giving the experience an otherworldly intensity.

Descending into Nubra Valley, the landscape transforms completely into the green, fertile valley known as Ldorma or the Valley of Flowers, situated between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas.

Diskit Monastery, the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in Nubra Valley, is home to a colossal 32-meter Maitreya Buddha statue visible from across the valley. The monastery's prayer halls, ancient murals, and rooftop views are among the most memorable sights in all of Ladakh.

In the late afternoon, the famous Hunder Sand Dunes offer one of India's most unique experiences: a Bactrian double-humped camel ride across cold desert sand dunes in the shadow of the Karakoram mountains. These camels are believed to be descendants of animals that once walked the ancient Silk Route caravans between Central Asia and the subcontinent.

Today's drive east along the Shyok River valley is on one of the most scenic and least - traveled roads in Ladakh, a remote corridor of turquoise water, towering cliffs, and ancient villages that feel completely untouched by the modern world.

Passing through Durbuk and Tangtse in the high - altitude Changthang region, home to the nomadic Changpa people and their prized Pashmina goats, you arrive at Pangong Tso Lake, the most visually stunning destination on any Leh Ladakh tour package.

Spend the evening at the lakeside watching the colors shift, the sky deepens, and the stars begin to emerge over one of the highest lakes in the world.

After a final morning at the lakeshore, the drive back to Leh takes you over Chang La Pass at 17,500 ft, the third highest motorable pass in the world. On the return route, visit three of the most important Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh: Hemis, Thiksey, and Shey Palace.

Arrive back in Leh by evening. Rest, explore the market, and prepare for the long journey south beginning tomorrow.

Today begins the return journey south on the Manali - Leh highway, one of the greatest mountain roads on Earth. After breakfast and checkout from your Leh hotel, you head south over Tanglang La at 17,585 ft, one of the highest motorable passes on the entire Manali-Leh route, where prayer flags mark the summit and views stretch endlessly across the Ladakh plateau.

Beyond Tanglang La, the highway crosses the vast More Plains (Morey Plains) at around 15,000 ft, one of the highest and longest flat plateaus in the world. Watch for kiangs, Tibetan wolves, and migratory birds that inhabit this remote plateau.

Passing through Pang and descending through the famous Gata Loops, 21 consecutive hairpin bends on a steep mountain face, and continuing past Sarchu and over Baralacha La at 16,050 ft, you arrive at Jispa or Keylong for the night. This quiet riverside camp town on the banks of the Bhaga River is a perfect resting point after a long day of extraordinary mountain driving.

The final driving day of your Leh to Delhi road trip carries you from Jispa through Keylong, Tandi, and Sissu, then through the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel), the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft, and through the beautiful Solang Valley before arriving in Manali.

In the evening, board your overnight Volvo bus in Manali for Delhi. The bus departs in the evening and arrives in Delhi the following morning, completing the full overland journey from Leh to Delhi by road.

The Volvo arrives in Delhi in the early morning. Your Leh - Manali - Delhi journey concludes here.

Eight days ago, you were standing at Leh Airport in the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh. You return to Delhi having crossed five mountain passes, camped beside Asia's most beautiful lake, ridden Silk Route camels in Nubra, visited the oldest monasteries in the Himalayas, and driven the entire length of one of the world's most legendary mountain highways. The journey is over. The stories last forever.
